Various studies have shown people have a positive emotional change when exposed to a pleasant smell. So a lady who smells an aftershave she likes will immediately have an elevated mood.
Kate Fox, social anthropologist and bestselling author of Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour, claims that a pleasant smell can make the difference. ‘If a person is clearly outstandingly beautiful, or extremely ugly, fragrance does not affect our judgement. But if the person is just average, a pleasant fragrance will tip the balance of our evaluation in his or her favour.’
So unless the man looks like a model from an advert for men’s aftershave, it is worth him finishing his grooming routine with a splash of cologne before leaving the house. This may be the difference between getting her attention and getting ignored.
Keep Her Away From the BBQ!
Inviting potential girlfriends to a BBQ could be a bad move if he is trying to get her in the mood. She will not only be disappointed with his culinary skills and the impending food poisoning but the smell of barbequed meat has been proven to turn women off.
According to Dr Alan Hirsch, founder and Neurological Director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, ‘the sense of smell impacts greatly on sexual arousal’. During studies Dr Hirsch identified that the smell of cherries and barbequed meat all acted to inhibit female sexual arousal.
In the same studies it was proven that cucumber actually enhanced female arousal amongst those tested. So not only will salad improve his diet but the smell will also improve his chances of attracting women.
In another study by the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Diagnostics in at the University of Vienna, results showed that the smell of East Indian Sandalwood essential oil and its main compound alpha-santalol also increases sexual arousal.
Fragrance manufacturers are constantly developing new smells based on studies like these and there are now many aftershaves on the market containing Sandalwood. These include Obsession by Calvin Klein and Sandalwood by Crabtree and Evelyn.
Make it Personal
Most men will wear a fragrance which they received as a gift from a friend or relative. Although the person buying it liked the smell from the bottle or how it smelt on someone else, it may not be the right smell for the man they bought it for.
Studies have showed that the same fragrance will give off different smells on different people. This is because of how the individual’s body chemistry reacts with the fragrance. Therefore to choose the right aftershave, it must be tried it on first. For best results the fragrance should be applied to the skin (wrist, neck, behind the ears) and not on clothes.
Don’t Underestimate the Power of the Nose
There is no ‘silver bullet’ when it comes to wearing fragrances. Despite what some advertisers will have men believe, one perfect smell will not immediately make women through themselves at his feet.
However, this much is true, humans can detect between 10,000 and 30,000 different odours and women have much more sensitive sense of smell than men. So choosing the right fragrance and smelling good, will get men noticed.
